A client from Live Oak recently contacted us about adding some audio to his mom’s Elite golf cart. He wanted something that would sound good and be reasonably easy to use. We put together a golf cart audio system that he approved of, and he set up an appointment to bring us the cart.
Custom Dash Plate
When the client dropped off the cart, he asked about us working in something custom for his mom. His kids refer to him as Nanamom and mentioned if we had a spot to add that somewhere, she would love it. The client knew we liked a challenge, which became one of our priorities on this build.
As we surveyed the dash area, looking for a spot to mount the JL Audio MBT-CRXv2 Bluetooth controller, we didn’t see an immediate place we liked. We did some measuring and found that by moving a few pieces in the main cluster, we could fit in the controller. Rearranging the cluster would also give us the opening for the customization!
We planned to create a 1/4 acrylic plate on our laser to overlay the existing cluster. We could then shift some of the switches to make room for the Bluetooth controller.
We started the fabrication process by taping up the cluster. With it taped, we then traced the profile of the cluster face. The tape was carefully pulled up and then we scanned the cluster profile on our flatbed scanner and imported it into our laser-cutting software. We took careful measurements of all the pieces in the cluster and began to lay them out in an orderly fashion. Once all of the details were in the design, we saw we had some room left for the crowning piece, a Nanamom logo! We were using red acrylic and would be painting everything but the Nanamom name black. Peeling off the protective paper after the paint dried revealed the red Nanamom wording. The final step in the dash was to wire up the JL Audio Bluetooth controller and install the plate.
Speakers and Amplifier by Rockford Fosgate
A common place for us to install speakers in golf carts is behind the front seats. There is normally depth below the factory trim panel, and room for some Rockford Fosgate 6.5″ speakers. This was the route we took on this golf cart, too. We cut out a mounting plate from 1/2″ black HDPE (Starboard) to stiffen up the mounting spot for the speakers. After trimming out the holes for the speakers, we were able to mount the plate and speakers securely to the cart.
Powering the Rockford Fosgate marine speakers would be a 2-channel Rockford Fosgate marine amplifier. Using marine equipment on this build ensured that the client’s mom would have great-sounding golf cart audio if driving in sun or rain.
Client Loved the Golf Cart Audio System
After calling the client, we were excited to find out that his mom would be picking up the golf cart. That would mean we would get to see her reaction to the customized dash plate. When she picked up the cart she loved the personalized touch to her cart! She also loved how cleanly her new golf cart audio system sounded!
