New Boat Speakers, Amplifier, and Radio for Local Business

The folks over at Sheppard’s Container Service asked us about adding new boat speakers to their Xpress bay boat. We talked with them about what they were looking for from the audio system and put together a complete system that would exceed their needs while staying within their budget.

New Boat Speakers by JL Audio

We wired up the blue lighting on the speakers to give the client some light at night.

We made sure there was enough room for the rods to still fit in the holders.

We were happy to find the console had enough space for our favorite speakers.

Our first step was to address the initial request to upgrade the boat speakers. The client wanted to keep the system simple yet maximize its output. Hearing this, we went with our number one performer for boat speakers, the JL Audio M6-880 coaxial speakers. These boat speakers offer incredible performance and bass you would normally expect from a subwoofer.
We found locations on the sides of the console that had room to fit the large 8.8″ speakers. We carefully cut the holes for the speakers and secured them to the consoles with stainless steel screws.

Boat Amplifier and Radio

We mounted the amplifier on the Starboard plate.

We label the fuse holders that we install so the client’s know which fuses are audio related.

The JL Audio M6-880 speakers are impressive, but they need some power to shine. Our go-to amplifier for the JL Audio M6-880 is the JL Audio XDM400/4 amplifier, bridged to provide 200 watts per speaker. We have found this combination results in maximum speaker output while retaining reliability.
We cut a piece of 1/2″ HDPE (Starboard) to mount the amplifier and secured it to the back of the console storage pocket. This board gave us a solid, waterproof mounting surface for the amplifier. We mounted the amplifier with stainless steel screws and then safely secured the wires.
We also upgraded the boat’s radio along with the speakers and amplifier. The choice for this job was the Fusion MS-RA210. We love the numerous source and zone options this radio has. After carefully measuring the dash, we cut the mounting hole and secured the radio with stainless steel screws.

Tuning, Cleanup, and Ready for the Water

The hard part of the installation was complete, so now it was time for us to adjust the amplifier settings. We set the gain control and crossover to give the client the best possible sound from the new boat speakers, amplifier, and radio. When it sounded as good as we knew it could be, we cleaned up the boat and called the client to come pick it up. The client loved the care we took with his boat and was blown away by how great it sounded.
